    2013.3

    Gliding, AKA falling gracefully.

    Armor Modifications!
Welcome to the very first edition of the Starbound Chronicle, our chance to give you a heads up on some of the things we've spent our time on in the month just gone.
For a good portion of this month, we've been working on armor mods.
We haven't said too much about the mechanics of the modification system up until now, so we felt now was a good time to talk about them.
Armor mods are found on armor of uncommon, rare and legendary status-- (those names will probably change). Each status has a pool of mods to choose from.
The effect of armor mods varies hugely. From armor that glows in the dark, to armor with a built in defib that activates if your energy bar is full when you die, shocking you back to life.

Armor with mods attached can also be crafted. At the start of the game, each race will be capable of crafting unique armor with mods no other race has access to. The Avian glide ability pictured above is one example of a race-specific mod.
Later in the game, players will have the ability to learn the secrets of alien tech, but early on, armor mods give each race a unique play style and ensure the importance of teamwork.

We'll be talking more about mods soon, including weapon mods that completely change the way each weapon is used.
    - the Starbound Chronicle Team

    Hint hint. ;)

    History, Lore and Music!

Another area of the game we've been focusing on recently is fleshing out the history of each race in Starbound and building a deep and compelling lore.
Starbounds lore is presented to the player through books, logs, papers and other materials found in the game world, as well as conversations with NPCs who will change what they say based on your race.
Players keep a log of all the materials they find in their log book, allowing the curious to piece together a rich timeline of events that have come to define each race and their place in the universe.
To give you an idea of the depth here we've decided to share with you an excerpt of the internal Avian history document we're working from.
You can download a PDF filled with Avian history by clicking the button below!

This month we also decided to start revealing more of the Starbound soundtrack. We've made available a large selection of the tracks that play during exploration.
Go and have a listen at : www.playstarbound.com/soundtrack.
Also to readers of the Chronicle we've decided to put out an exclusive ("Oh my!" -Tiy) track download. Eridanus Supervoid by the wonderful Curtis Schweitzer.

    Reader Letters

    Letter of the Month!
Dear Starbound team, I'm very much looking forward to the release of your game. However, something concerns me. I'm currently in the throes of an existential crisis, and I notice that Starbound will allow me to choose a character to play as. I'm worried that I'll spend so long trying to decide which species to go for that I'll miss all the important events in my life, such as my dog's birthday. I'm looking f[size=1em]or some advice; which character type do you recommend? I want my avatar to represent the fact I am a maverick. Thanks Randy P
    - Randy P, the internet
Well Randy, I'm sorry to say we don't yet have a John McCain race in Starbound. That said, regardless of which race you choose, your story will begin with your character being forced to flee their homeworld *alone*. On top of that, you'll be able to customize the personality of your player character. Poses like this really lend themselves to your maverick persona:

I guess that didn't help with your crisis at all, did it? Give your dog my best wishes.
    -the Starbound Chronicle Team

    Tasty Florans
Do Florans taste like celery? Would they be good dipped in ranch dressing
    - Paul, the internet
Hey Paul! There doesn't seem to be any record of anyone ever eating a Floran besides another Floran. I'd ask one for you, but approaching a Floran holding ranch dressing sounds as if it could be detrimental to my health.
    -the Starbound Chronicle Team

    The Bard
Hi, I saw you talking to Malukah on Twitter. Is she going to sing a song for you? I love her voice!
    - Sarah G, internets
Hi Sarah! We are indeed talking to Malukah about recording a song. We think she has a lovely voice too. We recommend that everyone check out her Youtube covers if they haven't already!

By the way...Happy Birthday, Starbound Community!

    Pre-order Starbound!

    Happy April, Chronicle Readers!

For ages now, a lot of you guys have been asking us...er, lots of questions, but chief among them:

    1) When can you preorder the game?

    2) How will beta be handled?

    3) How far along in development is Starbound?

    4) WHAT'S THE RELEASE DATE?

We can finally answer three of those questions!

Today we're opening up a pre-order on PlayStarbound.com via the Humble Store. Pre-ordering a copy of Starbound for $15 will grant you access to our beta when it's ready and a digital download of the extended soundtrack that will update as we add more tracks.

But if you feel like grabbing some extra goodies and throwing a little more support our way, we've got a tiered system allowing for just that, with rewards ranging from things like  a forum badge, input on a hat design, an in-game statue created in your likeness, an NPC named after you, and more!

A key thing to remember here is that preordering Starbound gives you access to its beta when it's ready, and while we're working every single day (seriously, what even is a weekend?) to make that happen as soon as possible, we can't give you a solid date just yet.

Yeah, we know that's pretty vague. How are you supposed to know how far along we are, or what we're working on right now?

    Well...

Click the banner above to access the Roadmap to the Stars! Styled like a classic JRPG overworld map, the Roadmap is designed to show you guys exactly what we're up to and what needs to be finished before we can release a beta. It also serves as a useful organizational tool for us!
Click on a map marker to bring up a list of tasks, each with their own description and progress bar. The sprites hanging out on each map marker represent the main developers working on each task! They'll move around a bit as development progresses.
    (注:不幸的是,这个网页已经被呵呵鱼删掉了。现在只能在网上找到截图一瞥罢了:

We wanted to mix it up a little this month with a Community Spotlight feature, showing off cool things our community has created. First up...

Vector Squared is a weekly community-oriented newspaper run by a handful of awesome forum-goers-- nababoo, Keeper, Strife, WackyWocky, ReverseShadow, shardival and Jonesy. They report on recently released screenshots, community goings-on, popular suggestions, fan art, and more. Their thread is an awesome way to catch up on Starbound-related news you may have missed in the past week!

The Weekly Monster Fanart Thread is a more recent addition to the forums, cropping up a few weeks ago when forum user R3MI decided to doodle each Friday's randomly generated monster from here on out. The idea caught on, and we've had quite a few people contributing their interpretations of what our MonsterBox spits out. We're looking forward to checking this thread each week!

    The Lusty Avian Maid
This month, a classic Avian play written by our very own demanrisu.
    PART 3
Human Translator's note: our most accurate translation of the Avian word "lusty" ( which is, of course, pronounced with an audible 'squawk') approximates, in our language, to "flatulent". This stage reading is the best example we have of the budding Avian performance culture, which seems to only have started after first contact with ours.
However, it is important to note that this transliteration is from a damaged document, so large parts are missing.

SCENE: Ext., Avian temple suicide tower. Grants-You-Wings, an Avian priestess, is lecturing a group of young Avians on the afterlife.
Grants-You-Wings: "...and as you hit the ground, your soul will ascend into the Aether, to be judged by Kluex himself."
First Student: "But what if we don't die when we hit the ground?"
Grants-You-Wings: "Then you have been chosen to stay on our mortal plane to serve Kluex and Rahe."
First Student: "That makes sense- hey, what's that smell...?"
OFF-STAGE: An ominous rumbling/fluttering sound shakes the stage.
Grants-You-Wings: "My apologies. I have been very lusty recently."
Second Student: "I'll say! That's worse than the smell of a village full of Grounded!"
Grants-You-Wings: "Now now, we don't talk about them here."
First Student: "I think I'll take my chances with the mortal plane."
ON-STAGE: First Student steps towards the edge of the suicide tower.
First Student: "Grants-You-Wings, your lust is driving me towards the edge! Literally!"
Grants-You-Wings: "Yes! Students, look at this young Avian as an example! He is committing his soul to the Aether!"
First Student: 揑 resign my fate to the arms of Kluex!
ON-STAGE: First Student falls off of edge of stage, screaming briefly before a loud thud heralds his arrival on the ground. Second Student strolls over to the edge and visibly winces.
Second Student: 揃y Rahe, you can even smell it over here!
ON-STAGE: Second Student dives off the stage. A second thud is heard.
Grants-You-Wings: 揧es! Kluex, guide these souls to the Aether!
OFF-STAGE: Second Student begins to call for help; he has survived the fall.
ON-STAGE: Third Student, unable to bear the priestess flatulence, begins to move towards the edge of the suicide tower.
Third Student: 揃etter not keep him waiting.
ON-STAGE: Gagging from the smell, Third Student takes a running leap off of the edge of the stage.
    OFF-STAGE: Second Student starts shrieking.
Second Student: 揘o! Don抰 fall on me! Don抰 fall on-
OFF-STAGE: A slightly more wet thud, then silence.
    -----------

PS- Apologies for the delay! We promise we weren't slacking, we were just waiting until we could announce our preorder! Next month's newsletter will be on time.

    Starter Ships

Hey Chronicle Readers! This month we thought we'd give you a look at each race's starter ships.
Each of our races are pretty distinct from one another, and of course their ships should reflect that! From the wildly overgrown design of Floran ships to the cold ultramodern vessels of the Apex, the unique design of each starter ship may give players reason to reconsider their character choice!
Made your mind up about playing a Hylotl, but you're totally in love with the Glitch ship? Never fear! Find a Glitch buddy and hang out on their ship instead!
Click the links below to view full-sized screenshots of each ship!

    Indies Crash E3!

Last week, we were told we'd been nominated for Indies Crash E3, a contest being run by the developers of Ensemble Online!
The grand prize winners receive tickets and accomodations for their trip to E3, to be split with the person who nominated them. We've been running neck and neck against another wonderful studio called Saibot, so we really need all of your help and support to win! If we do pull it off and make it to E3, we'll be making a video of our adventures throughout the expo, as well as bringing along a laptop to allow people to play a little Starbound in its current state!
We'd really love to make this happen, and we really want to come out and meet as many of you as we can! If you'd like to help us, click here or click the image below to vote for us. Thank you!

    Reader Letters

Hey guys, the names Israel! I've been into independently developed games since 3 years ago, when I played Cave Story, and it's a career I'm going to (try and fail) to pursue when I get out of high school. I'm aware, of course, that most of you didn't work on Terraria, but I feel I should note I loved that game, and honestly a lot of that loved has been transferred to Starbound, whether you like it or not.
Although I haven't been very involved with the community, I've followed production as closely as I can, and hope to log hours upon hours of play time. I'm really looking forward to seeing how you guys will beef up player progression. If this game doesn't turn out how I hope, I will track down ALL OF YOU and recite very angry haikus. Then I might cry.
    -Israel

Hey Israel! We hope you don't fail in pursuing a career as a games developer. FOLLOW YOUR DREAMS, MAN. <3
PS- If the game turns out exactly as you hope, will you still write us angry haikus? We like angry haikus. They're our second favorite, after existentially horrific sonnets.
    - Starbound Chronicle Team
Hey, a friend recommended I should send some of my drawings to you guys. Also heard some fan art might even get on the next chronicle?
    I hope you enjoy them!
    -EmRA

Hey EmRa! We liked your fan art very much-ly, so we're linking some here for our readers to enjoy. Thanks for writing in!

    New Music

Our amazing composers, Curtis Schweitzer and Solatrus, have come out with some new Starbound-related tunes! You'll get these tracks with your pre-order if you've done that already. If not, feel free to hop on over to their respective websites and show their newly-released albums some love! You can also listen to the new tracks directly on their sites.
Check out Curtis' album here and Solatrus' here!
    Thank You!

PS- We'll totally release a trailer ASAP!

    Intro Cinematics

Starbound is a game about escaping from your homeworld on a spaceship and starting your life anew. We want to allow players as much creative freedom as possible in shaping their own stories and characters while still providing them with a bit of history.
Now when you create a new character in Starbound, you'll get a short comic-style cinematic that should give you some insight as to why people of each of our seven races might want to pack up and leave home!
Legris has been working on the art for these scenes, and we'll try to keep showing you sneak peeks as things progress!
A lot of you have been sending us voice clips to audition to narrate these opening cinematics, too, and so many of them have been awesome, so thanks!
We maaay or may not have landed someone for the role...more on that later! ;)

Another thing we've been working on recently is our cooking mechanic. Each race will start out with its own lore-friendly menu of recipes-- entrees, side dishes, desserts, snacks, drinks-- but eventually you'll be able to learn to cook other races' food too! Not sure why you'd want to swap a burrito for a Glitch's automato soup, but the option is there! Can't guarantee Avian food will agree with Human stomachs, either...
You'll craft food at culinary tables, from produce, meat and other ingredients that you can harvest yourself, buy in a shop, or trade for. The more rare and expensive the ingredients, the bigger the benefits.
On top of health and status effects, food can also be placed around the world as decorative objects. Set a table fit for a king!

    Fan Art

We've got some awesome fan art submissions this month. This one above, called Race to the Bars, was submitted by community member Bietol. And it's conveniently 1920x1080! You can find more of Bietol's work here!

We've also got this lovely, barbaric Floran submission from Shardival, called The Great Race! You can find more of Shardival's work here. Thanks for the submissions, guys!

    Lots of Lore

While Demanrisu is scribbling away, producing loads and loads of in-game lore for Starbound, Tiy's taken on a massive lore project of his own-- race-based item descriptions! Examining objects in-game has always told you a little about what they do. Each character, no matter their background, would have the same thing to say about each object.
Now, each object's description will vary depending on which race you're playing. An Avian will have much more interesting things to say about the contents of an Avian temple than, say, his Apex comrade, so it might be worth having a diverse party tag along with you!

Tiy's nearly finished the descriptions, and with our in-game object count exceeding a thousand, the word count will weigh in around 140,000 words. More than your average novel, and that's just for object descriptions.
It may seem like a small/insignificant feature to some, but it's something we hope will greatly contribute to the atmosphere of the game as well as the sense of discovery in constantly reading new tidbits of information about each race. So...lore fans, rejoice!

We're always hanging out in IRC to chat and answer questions, but conversations on IRC can be fleeting! People miss out on good info if they don't stick around. To help remedy this problem and provide sort of a permanent home for Q&A sessions, we've opened up an "Ask Us Anything" thread on the forums. It will be locked a lot of the time, but occasionally opened up to allow people to ask questions. It's totally free of off-topic posts and clutter, so you've got easy access to the answers you're looking for. Check it out!

    Fan Art

WackyWocky's making it his mission to draw two members of each Starbound race! Above is his Floran Huntress-- you can check out more of his stuff here!

User -s3ro- from the forum community has been drawing some top-notch Starbound fan art as well, including variations of the Monster Monster Contest winner-- Poptops! Check out more of -s3ro-'s awesome art here.

    A Month's Worth of Development

    Happy August, readers!
July was an incredible for Starbound progress. We're at a point where things are really coming together nicely. This past month we implemented the quest system, an in-game instrument system that we've all been having a ridiculous amount of fun with, bosses, and added lots of mini-biomes to generate some diversity within Starbound's vast landscapes.
We've done a whole lot of work on player progression- especially in the beginning of the game. It's important that players are able to jump right into the game and easily figure out what they're doing, and why, and that they have fun doing it!
This has meant lots of combat-related tweaks, tweaking ore and loot distribution, crafting recipes, monster AI, and weapon properties.
On a sort of different note, we've also finally implemented the soundtrack! Curtis Schweitzer and Solatrus' tunes sound wonderful. It's amazing how much the addition of music can add to the atmosphere, and just the overall experience of exploring.
We've still got a whole lot to do, but there's a general wrap-up of all we've been working on lately- as always, you can keep up with daily progress on our blog.

    Chucklefish @ Insomnia Festival

Hey! In case you hadn't heard, we're going to be talking about and showing off Starbound at Multiplay's Insomnia Minecraft Expo UK! The expo takes place from August 23-26 at the Telford International Centre in Telford, UK. The whole event looks like it's shaping up to be loads of fun and we're really looking forward to it, and to seeing a bunch of you there!

    Starbound ABC Music Guide
We've been having a lot of fun with our in-game instrument system, and we're anticipating you guys having a lot of fun with it too! It can be a little difficult to find all your favorite songs written in ABC notation, as some of the old song databases for games like Lord of the Rings Online and Mabinogi have gone offline. Fortunately, forum user Lateo has written a really handy guide for converting midi files to ABC! Check it out here.
A handful of people have already begun to contribute songs, which is so exciting! I hope we can build a big, awesome song database of our own.

    Insomnia Gaming Festival!

    Happy September!
We spent much of the past month balancing, tweaking and preparing tier one of Starbound for our very first expo! I'm sure a lot of you are sick of hearing about it. ;) Still, all of the late nights and anxiety really paid off when we got to Insomnia Gaming Festival and were finally able to give people a sneak peek at our current build of Starbound.
As the current build of the game is still not ready for beta, we had some bugs and crashes to contend with over the weekend (especially the first day) but overall things went better than any of us could have predicted.
If you missed Friday's panel you can watch that here and if you missed Saturday's live demo with the Yogscast you can watch that here! We may even have more pictures/videos from the event soon.
Thanks so much to everyone who stopped by at our stall, at panels and meet and greets, or just said hello to us at the expo!
We had an insane amount of fun meeting people (and each other, even though we were missing a few crucial members of the team) and we've come back super-pumped to get things done.

    What's Up in September

Watching loads of people check out the game was really useful as far as alerting us to the sort of problems we need to address prior to beta, and gave us lots of ideas for piecing things together. Over the weekend, we said that developing Starbound is like piecing together a very large puzzle. There are a whole lot of elements and they're almost all complete, but they need to be pieced together in a cohesive and logical way in order for the game to be fun. That's where we are right now!
We'll continue to keep you in the loop with daily updates, weekly monsters, and all the rest on the road to getting stuff done- I know we've been slacking on it the past week or so. Sorry!
Oh, and check out that screenshot of our penguin UFO boss above (click to enlarge). <3

    September Wrap-Up!

    Happy almost-October, readers!
September was exciting! With the team all revved up from August's convention, we went into the month with pretty fresh perspectives and the obvious goal of getting everything ready for beta as efficiently as we possibly can.
Members of the team have been focusing on different areas of the game. Some of us are focusing on producing content for all the biomes, mini-biomes (biomes within biomes!), dungeons and villages that we want to make it into the beta! Others have been focusing on monster and villager AI,
balancing combat, and some new features like the grappling hook shown above!
A big, big part of getting Starbound beta-ready is finishing implementing tier progression. We need to get our tiers in proper working order! That means balancing combat and monsters, implementing tier-based objects, armors, weapons and tools, tech and dungeons! It's been like a huge jigsaw puzzle trying to put all those pieces together.
We know the end of 2013 is drawing near, and lots of you are getting anxious. Let's talk about that a little!

    Beta, Release and 2013

This month brought a lot of controversy about the release date of the beta versus Starbound's "full release"-- among other things, like sewage-based monsters! Let's clear some things up.
When we began pre-orders back in April, the idea of not completing the entire game by the end of the year seemed absurd! So we set our official "release date estimate" for 2013 and elsewhere stated that the game would definitely be out this year.
Game development is fairly unpredictable, though, especially on games as large as Starbound, and things often take much longer than we could have thought possible. Given that, we'd taken the stance that it's the beta that will definitely be available this year, not the full game. While we're always actively talking to people in IRC and the forums, we only recently updated our website's info to reflect these changes! Sorry about that.
We continue to work on the game every single day and we're making loads of progress! We're confident we'll have this thing ready for you guys to play before the end of the year. We really want to thank you guys for your continued support and patience, and for having faith in our project. You're all awesome.

    Community Spotlight

It's been a couple months since we did a community art feature! We're getting awesome, awesome fan art all the time. This month I wanted to show off daemonstar and WakeskaterX's fan art! The threads have been around a little while, but deserve a feature nonetheless!
Daemonstar made some characters using our online character generator and drew them, and look at how amazing they turned out! Ahhhh! WakeskaterX practiced his pixel art skills and produced some cool art of the Novakids, Florans and Hylotl.
Well done, guys! <3 As always, we love checking out fan art, fan fiction and videos posted here.

    Adding Status Effects!

Happy November! Hope you all had a lovely Halloween. Click the screenshot above for a bigger, wallpaper-sized screenshot. As we've been gearing up for beta, one of the things we've been doing is configuring status effects and adding them to items! I get loads of requests for more modding tutorials, so I thought I'd give you guys a quick breakdown of how adding an item with status effects works.

For the purposes of this tutorial, I've chosen a Floran dessert called Burning Eyeballs-- not REAL eyeballs, but oculemons do look quite a bit like eyeballs. And these ones are spicy. Get it? We are hilarious.
When you eat Burning Eyeballs, you'll experience the following effects: full hunger bar, slow healing over time for 15 seconds, faster running and further jumping for 5 seconds, and...you'll catch on fire. Just a little, though! It's totally worth it.
As you can see, adding your chosen effects to an item is as simple as copying and pasting a little bit of code and occasionally tweaking an "amount" value. Status effect files themselves are a bit more complicated in that they often need new code to work, but you can also tweak existing status effects in order to create a whole new effect.

Here we've got a status effect labeled "mollyhealing2". It causes the player to heal slowly for 15 seconds. By changing the values for "duration" and "amount", I was able to create weaker and stronger versions of the status effect so I could apply them to more common or more rare consumable items. The weakest heals for 5 seconds, and the strongest heals for 30 seconds.
You can do the same with other effects, so it's fun to mess around with them! I've done the same with the "sugarrush" status effect, which causes the player to run higher and jump further for 5 seconds. It's a weaker version of another running/jumping status effect, allowing me to add it to more common and easily made sugary foods without breaking the game's balance.
I hope some of you found that useful! Let me know what other tutorials you'd like to see.

This month we've got the first in a series of Starbound lore fables written by Ashton Raze. Art by PFlute!

Once upon a time, many years ago, our glorious leader Big Ape was on his way to market. Many other leaders sent their servants to market, but not Big Ape. He went himself, in order to shower his subjects with his greatness, and let them bask in his glory. He was kind like that.
This particular day, Big Ape was accompanied by his mother's prized cattlesnake (and at least fifty Miniknog guards), in order to sell the beast. His mother had heard that they were receiving high bids on leading auction sites, so Big Ape was more than willing to help her earn her fortune. The journey was going smoothly, until Big Ape realised his sizeable entourage had come to a halt.
"What's all this, then?" Big Ape called out. Through the crowd came an old Hylotl crone, cackling and holding out her hand.
"Yer cattlesnake for these magic beans!" she crowed, rattling some regular-looking beans in her hand. Big Ape snatched them up. It was a good trade, he knew it. Magic beans!
"You have yourself a deal," he said to the crone, handing over the reigns of the cattlesnake. Then he ordered the Miniknog to have the crone arrested for illegal street peddling. In the ensuing scuffle, the cattlesnake ran away, never to be seen again.
Big Ape returned home, and his mother praised his business savvy and celebrated the investment in magic beans, despite losing her prized animal. Big Ape placed his magic beans in the back of a drawer, and over time, forgot about them. One day, he found them in the drawer and tossed them outside, because they smelt a bit like a fishpond.
The next day, Big Ape could hardly believe his eyes. A giant beanstalk had sprouted in his garden.
"In the name of me, I swear I shall scale this beanstalk!" Big Ape exclaimed, then effortlessly climbed up the gigantic plant without even breaking a sweat.
At the top, he froze. He found himself on a solid platform of cloud, standing before a large castle. He walked up and knocked. The door opened and before Big Ape stood a giant. Big Ape looked down at the giant and greeted him.
"I am Big Ape, your glorious leader," Big Ape said.
The giant growled, and gestured Big Ape inside.

Big Ape surveyed the castle. It was filled with pots, pans, bones, furniture, a couple of those trees made of eyeballs, and an Avian in a cage. Big Ape approached the Avian, who looked at him blankly, turned around, and promptly laid a golden egg.
"Gold!" Big Ape exclaimed. "Gold! Think of all the palaces this could buy! My people would love me even more!"
Without stopping to think, Big Ape grabbed the Avian by the neck and ran from the castle. Suddenly he heard thundering footsteps, and a booming voice: "Fee, fi, fo, fum, I smell the blood of some Apex scum."
Big Ape rolled his eyes, ran to the top of the beanstalk, hurled the Avian down (it could probably fly, he figured) and waited to face the giant. The giant came charging, his face screwed up in rage, and Big Ape hit him with a flawless one-two punch, then grabbed him by the shoulders and leaped down from the castle in the sky, smashing the giant into the ground. There they fought, Ape and Giant, until finally Big Ape was victorious, aided only in a small way by the three hundred armed Miniknog guards who'd turned up in the meantime.
Big Ape stood atop the giant's corpse and looked around for his Avian companion. The golden egg-laying creature lay on the floor, looking as if he'd crashed into the ground at high velocity. Big Ape shook his head sadly. Another victim of the giant's hubris, no doubt.
Big Ape learned two important lessons that day; he was rich enough not to be bothered about losing a supply of golden eggs, and that he could totally take a giant in a fight.
    ***
Hope you enjoyed that little bit of Apex propaganda. 'Till next time, readers!
